Daffest

Have I mentioned that I love living in a small town? Because I really, stinkin' do.

I love everything about small towns. I love that the people call each other by their first names whether it be on the street, in a local store or from front porch to front porch. I love that pure strangers wave back to me when I drive by them in my car. I love that the guy who you think is going to ask you to hitchhike to Lord-knows-what-mountain is really only stopping to tell you that you have a break light out (Thanks, man!).

For such a bitty town, Saranac Lake has so much life in it. As far as I've seen, most of the people here genuinely love living in this place and they take time to contribute to things that help build the community. Right now, Saranac Lake is in the middle of Daffest.

Daffest is three weeks worth of spring-welcoming events that include a soap-box derby, art shows, planting clinics, great food and great music. All of these events are also centered around one main theme: Daffodils.

The people behind Daffest have a goal of planting ONE MILLION daffodil bulbs all over Saranac Lake! Planting began in September 2010 and more and more bulbs are being planted each year. It so fun to see a town that's known for it's snow and sub-zero temperatures blooming in so much yellow!

Local businesses and organizations have also decorated old bicycles for Daffest and they can be seen all around town. Seriously, how cute are these:

Abilene loves to eat play with flowers so we took some time on Saturday to explore the daffodils for a while.

I'm trying to teach her the sign for "flower." She's somewhat getting the hang of it.

And, I have no idea why but, for some reason, Abilene thinks that when other people sniff flowers it's absolutely hilarious.

But then this started happening so our exploring had to stop.

Saranac Lake has other fun community events that I'm so excited for Abilene and little Baby "V" to experience like Winter Carnival and First Night but those are future events for future posts. So for now, I just can't wait until we have our own yard and the Varner family can contribute to Saranac Lake's million daffodils!
