Scaredy Cat
As a child, I was sure that there were certain things I'd grow out of.
One being:
And another being:
Yes. I admit that, as an adult, I've still found myself skipping steps just to get to the first floor faster and sweating like a horse in bed because I couldn't possibly sleep with any part of my body "exposed" to the imaginary dangers that exist in the middle of the night.
So sad and yet, so true.
That's why I had to laugh when I read my friend, Steph's, post Kids Say the Scariest Things...
I first met Steph when we moved to PA. She was on Young Life Staff in the Philly Region and she and her husband are two of the funniest people I've ever met. Since then, she's had two babes of her own, is loving life as a momma and gives people a front row seat to see what life's really like as a mom on her blog, Confessions of a Stay-At-Home Mom.
Steph and I could not be more alike when it comes to scary movies, scary books, scary... anything. We both avoid them at all costs.
I'm still 100% convinced that the reason I loath getting into the lakes around here is because TBS used to play an unnecessary amount of Jaws commercials during the summers when I was a kid. Have I ever seen the movie Jaws? Nope. Those friggin' commercials were enough to completely obliterate any positive nautical associations I had all on their own.
We live by lakes, people, lakes - without sharks in them!
I know this. But it only takes two seconds of me treading water in a spot where I can't see the bottom to be completely convinced I'll be attacked by a giant, Brooke-eating, great white shark.
Curse you, TBS.
Does this scenario sound familiar to anyone else? Or is it just me... well, and Steph.
If there's anybody else out there with a story, movie, book or commercial to blame for their irrational fears of who-knows-what-else, then her post is for you.
So read on, my frightened friend, you're in good company.
Scary movies aren't really my thing.
I'd like to think it's because I'm terribly empathetic and compassionate, but I've never been able to watch a horror movie without it completely screwing with my mind. Ok, if we are honest, I also have an overwhelmingly active imagination, which doesn't help either.
I remember being a small child, and my parents allowing me to watch movies like Gremlins and Killer Klowns from Outer Space. Have you seen them? I don't care if they are labeled "Comedy Horror." To a 5 year old, they are sheer terror. Do you know how many nights I laid awake, wondering if there were gremlins wreaking havoc in my closet? Or that I might wake up to a Killer Klown just staring at me, all creepy and and ready to attack, from the corner of my room?
I admit, I am the only one to blame for picking books such as Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark and More Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark
by Alvin Schwartz out at the library. People, those stories are
creepy. The titles do not lie. Some of those stories still haunt me to
this day.
See? I'm a total lame-o.
But this is why I avoid scary movies like the plague... Click here to read more!
