A lake-view date provided by Lakeview Deli
I have mentioned how much I love living here, haven't I?
Get this:
Yesterday, Brad's parents let the hubs and I go on a little dinner date without the babes (totally awesome, right?). It was another absolutely gorgeous day so Brad and I thought that it would be nice to just get some sandwiches and have a little picnic by the lake. There are a couple sandwich shops in Saranac Lake but Lakeview Deli is particularly good and it's (big surprise) right in front of Lake Flower.
The hubs and I decide that Lakeview Deli is where we'll get dinner so we drive over there, park in the back and enter the deli through the side door. The woman at the register greets us like we're long lost friends (no, seriously) and the other employees smile and ask us how they can help us.
As the hubs and I are contemplating what to get (since all deli meat is "game on" again for me now, woohoo!), I notice that there's a blue cover over the entire deli counter. Having worked at a little sandwich place myself, it curiously looked like they were putting everything away for the day.
So I say, "Oh, I'm sorry, are you guys closed?"
"Yeah, but it's no big deal, sometimes people come in late," She replies. "You guys can get whatever you want."
::pause::
Okay, that in and of itself is just plain awesome. Not only were they re-dirtying utensils for us, they were super nice and smilely about it - like we weren't inconveniencing them at all! We would have never known they were packing up shop had we not asked. But it gets better...
::un-pause::
"Oh, wow! Thank you so much! That's so nice of you guys!" I say.
Now that I'm looking for it, I can see other areas in which the deli was already closed. For example, the sweet woman at the cash register had already started counting the money in the drawer.
So I ask, "Hey, um... just so we know for next time, what time do you guys close?"
All the employees are still smiling.
"Five."
I look at my watch.
It's 6:30.
Nope, not joking.
SIX! THIRTY!
Oh. My. Dear. Goodness. They didn't just close 5 minutes ago. They closed an HOUR AND A HALF ago!
I was so embarrassed but, by then, they were already half way through (joyfully) making our sandwiches!
The hubs and I tried to pick our jaws up off the floor long enough to get a few more "thank you's" out before we attempted leaving through the front door - which was (you guessed it) locked.
The employees just smiled as they redirected us back out the side entrance.
I couldn't believe it.
We walked across the street, found a spot by the lake and ate the best deli sandwiches Saranac Lake has to offer on our first date (alone) as parents of two.
Thank you Lakeview Deli for totally making our night!
The end.
And this is where I finish the post by telling everyone to eat at Lakeview Deli in hopes that some blog-encouraged business will make up for our hour-and-a-half-late deli order.
